Cup Week Fashion - The Spectacle Behind The Track

While horse racing undoubtedly takes centre stage, Cup Week is a spectacle that extends beyond the track. The atmosphere buzzes with excitement, the clinking of champagne glasses, and chatter bursting from the sun-drenched hospitality areas. And at the heart of it all? A captivating display of impeccably styled, vibrantly colourful fashion.

My approach to race day attire is to honour the tradition of elegance and sophistication, yet I dare to sidestep fleeting trends. As an advocate for wearing what makes YOU feel fabulous, I believe that as long as you respect the guidelines, personal style should reign supreme.

Cup Week is the time to embrace your brightest hues, embellish your florals, and dazzle in your most striking accessories. I love wearing statement pieces that make people smile or spark conversation. However, it has taken me years to build the confidence to wear some of my favourite ensembles. So, for anyone seeking a little boost of self-assurance, Cup Week is most definitely the place to feel confident and shine.

As you navigate the balance of tradition, dress code, and personal flair, I encourage you to think beyond trends. Use them to inspire you but let your interpretation of style guide your final ensemble.

Here are a few key considerations and a touch of inspiration to spark your creativity:

Dress length – I recommend mid-length or longer styles to reflect the tradition; anything above the knee can stay on the hanger!

1

Dress for the conditions – With Cup Week at the start of November, be mindful of the weather. If it's a cooler day, consider a longer sleeve or a lined dress. If it's warmer, opt for fabrics that breathe. I’m a proud scarf collector with over 20 in my collection. I find a light scarf perfect for draping over my shoulders for a little warmth, and it can easily transition into a stylish accessory for your handbag or hat when not needed.

Bag – Think about where you'll be spending most of your time. If you'll be standing most of the day, a clutch might be a hassle when juggling a champagne flute, so I would opt for a handbag with a strap instead. If you're seated at a table, then a chic clutch would be a great option.

2

Headwear – Cup Week is your opportunity to wear an extravagant headpiece. I would go for a fascinator or an embellished hat – the more striking and unique, the better! But if you prefer a more subtle look, an embellished headband or glamorous hair clips can create an elegant touch.

3

Makeup and hair – I suggest a minimal, yet classic makeup look. On a hot day, you'll want your skin to breathe. For your hair, I recommend soft waves in a ponytail or a sleek low bun to accommodate a hat or fascinator. A low bun is easy to restyle yourself throughout the day.

Over the next few days, we’ll be showcasing curated Cup Week looks from Merivale Mall. If you're looking for some style inspiration, be sure to keep an eye out for our upcoming features!
