Getting an invitation to an event can be exciting and a bit overwhelming for some people.

What comes to mind for many people is ‘what the heck am I going to wear’.  I have had many clients who have told me that they have turned down events because they do not have the confidence or knowledge about where to start preparing for an event.

Just to define what we mean – event is not just a ball or a wedding or a fancy fashion event – it could be a dinner out with a loved one, a family get together or whatever inspire you.

Here are my 10 top tips for event dressing.

  1. Understand the invitation.
  2. Over dress to impress.
  3. Keep balance and choose what to accentuate.
  4. Understand what best enhances your figure and colouring.
  5. Invest in a simple dress or separates that can be worn again.
  6. Think outside the square.
  7. Wear statement jewellery.
  8. Choose comfortable heels.
  9. Sort your ideal party handbag.
  10. Be confident.

Understand the invitation

There is a myriad of dress codes that may or may not be indicated on an invitation.  They are as follows:

  1. Smart casual – usually more smart than casual but not sequins or tuxedos. Think jeans and a heel with a smart top and blazer add a jacket to jeans and shirt for men.
  2. Semi Formal / Cocktail – More formal than what you would wear to the office - less formal than what you would wear to formal event. Often what is worn to an event that finishes before 7pm.  Shorter / cocktail dresses, longer dressy skirts and tops; dress shirt, suit and tie for men.
  3. Black tie (creative and conservative) – This is the most common formal dress code for weddings, balls and fashion galas.
For women this means long gowns, heels and dressy cocktail dresses, with the addition of interesting jewellery or fun textures and colours for a creative look.
For men this is tuxedo and white shirt with patent black shoes and accessories.  To be more creative add another colour / texture in the jacket, shirt or tie.
  4. White tie – full evening dress with floor length gowns and gloves for women and tails or dinner suits for men with white bow tie and grey jacket and patent black shoes and socks. Usually for royal or formal events of high standing.

Ensure you understand the intent of the host and look back at previous photos from past years (if there are any).

Overdress to impress

New Zealanders are often chronic under dressers.  We worry a lot about the judgement of others and hold ourselves back with all sorts of conservative excuses.  Over dressing is paying respect to the occasion with your effort - not looking like a circus act.  Choose a flattering colour and style and dare to stand out for the right reasons.

Keep balance and choose what to accentuate

It can be very tempting to use a formal occasion to ‘showcase your assets’.  This can be wearing a very low-cut and short sparkly dress.  Although there is nothing wrong with a plunging neckline or short hem – together they can look less than formal.  Choose one ‘daring’ element and showcase that.

Understand what best enhances your figure and colouring

In any type of dressing, we want people to notice the person we are.  Understanding which garments draw attention to our face and personality is super helpful.  Everyone has their own unique colouring - not every shade flatters everyone - choosing an outfit in a colour that makes your complexion shine is a game changer.  Contrary to popular belief, not everyone suits black or looks good in a little black dress.

Invest in a simple dress or separates that can be worn again

We often get hooked into a ‘dress’ for a formal occasion.  This does not have to be the case at all.  A great skirt and top worn together can look perfect for an event as can separates from different places.  During winter don’t disregard sparkly knitwear with great pants, a pair of heels and immaculate make-up.  A simple dress in one colour can be elevated with jewellery and a sharp lipstick.

Think outside the square

Again, think pants and a top, a pantsuit or separates.  This is sustainable dressing. Things that you will wear again make so much sense.  A beautiful silk top that cuts well in all the right places will go a long way in your wardrobe as will a great pair of lightweight silk pants that will be fabulous for events.  Also consider mainstream shops for these pieces.  Don’t just purchase when the event is 2 weeks away – purchase and have on hand so the lead up is not too stressful.

Wear statement jewellery

Jewellery transforms an outfit and finishes a look.  Choose whether you are going to work with silver or gold or a balanced mix (which is rougher to get right).  Then extend the story through your outfit.  Decide where you want the attention to be – necklace or earrings or a balance of both.  Matching sets can be very effective, especially if the outfit is plain.  Look at options for colours if you have a neutral outfit or choose something that adds another level to your outfit.

Choose comfortable heels

Comfortable heels can seem like an oxymoron.  The days of the sky-high stiletto being the only option for events are long passed.  There are heaps of more comfortable options.   Choose something neutral like nude, silver or gold that you know will go with your aesthetic and that you can wear to a formal event for at least 5 years.

Sort your ideal party handbag

Like all accessories a handbag can complete an outfit.  It needs to fit a phone, lipstick and your keys…. Ensure that it tones with the rest of your accessories and again, a metallic or sparky neutral can be an excellent option.

Be confident

Wear it, own it and be the best you.  Formal gear can feel uncomfortable and challenging so when you decide what to wear make sure that everything in the above points is covered and your confidence will shine.  Trust your judgement and speak positively to yourself.
